Grain Storage Facility, OBPA
A&C provided Professional Design Services which included preliminary planning and final design services for the construction of a Grain Storage Facility within the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority’s (OBPA) shipping and rail port property, located along the St. Lawrence River.
Grain Storage, Towers, & Equipment
Two (2) bushel grain storage bins have been added at the port, each holding 10 rail cars of grain. The capacity of each rail car is equivalent to three large trucks. It has a receiving leg with a 121’ discharge height, a 120’ tall 10’x10’ main support tower, a 62.5’ tall 8’x8’ support tower, a 62.5’ tall two-legged support tower, a 125 LF catwalk and install associated bin fill conveyors, bin reclaim conveyors, rail receiving pit conveyors, and rail transfer conveyors. All components are pre-engineered and manufactured for installation and assembly at the project site. The new upgrades allow for the grain to be brought in by train, truck, or ship, stored, and then moved out by truck as needed. The new grain bin storage system at the port is linked to the facility’s “flat-storage building.” A conveyor system automates the process of loading, unloading, and storage. If needed in the future, it is situated adjacent to a second larger flat storage building at the port and is designed for one additional 10 rail car storage bin, and when business grows, it has two locations set aside for two larger 100 rail car bins.
Structural
Structural design and construction include a rail receiving pit, concrete foundations and piles for the storage bins, the foundation for the 10’x10’ support tower, and the foundation for the 8’x8’ support tower north of the storage bins, and 1,600 sf truck loading and operations building.
Site Electrical Work
Electrical design and construction include the installation of underground electric service from the pad-mounted switch and transformer northwest of the grain storage facility to the proposed service panel located just south of the receiving leg. Install service panel, feeder circuit panel(s), conduits and cable to equipment, starter and disconnects to the equipment, grounding equipment, control equipment, a site light mounted on the 10’x10’ main support tower, and obstruction lights mounted atop the receiving leg main tower.
Site, Earthwork, & Utility
Topographic survey mapping and geotechnical investigation were completed for the 2-acre portion of the Port property. Site, earthwork, and utility work included yard drain removal, storm drainage utilities, earthwork, crushed stone base, asphalt paving, regrading of crushed stone, and coordination with CSX on removal and replacement of rail thru the project area. Storm drainage utilities included the installation of seven (7) catch basins, 550 LF storm pipe, storm piping under CSX railroad, and construction of a storm outfall to the St. Lawrence River. Relocation of 265’ of 8” watermain to provide fire protection, approximately 9,000 SF of heavy-duty asphalt apron in the areas around the grain storage facility and truck loading building. Installation of additional crushed stone and regrading of the adjacent crushed stone area is required to facilitate proper drainage. Project Management services included SEQR, NYS DEC, and USACE stormwater outfall permitting, and NYS DOS Coastal Consistency permitting and coordination with the State and City LWRP.
